City of Stirling joins Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative
The City of Stirling has proudly become a participant in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative.
As part of Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week 2024, which runs from Sunday 20 October to Saturday 26 October, the City of Stirling has proudly become a participant in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative. This global scheme is aimed at supporting and raising awareness for individuals living with hidden disabilities. With one in five people in Australia and New Zealand having a disability, and 85 per cent of these being non-visible, the initiative provides a subtle but impactful way for people to communicate their needs.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme, established in 2016, offers a way for people with conditions such as autism, chronic pain, dementia, anxiety, and sensory impairments to indicate they may need patience, understanding, or assistance. Individuals can choose to wear a sunflower-themed lanyard, pin, or wristband, which signals to City staff and others that they may require extra support.
In preparation for the City’s involvement, customer-facing staff have received training to recognise and respond to the Sunflower symbol. This ensures that anyone wearing the symbol is met with greater empathy and care. Residents can collect free Sunflower lanyards, pins, and wristbands from the City’s Libraries and Administration Centre.
By adopting the Sunflower Initiative, the City of Stirling is helping to create a more inclusive environment for everyone. The City is committed to creating a diverse, accessible and engaged community through a range of services and facilities for people living with a disability.
