Rotarians have celebrated half a century of uniting to take action and create lasting change

Rotarians have celebrated half a century of uniting to take action and create lasting change, with the City hosting a 50th anniversary gala event this week for the Rotary Club of Karrinyup.

The club was chartered in 1974 and is a member organisation of a global network of 1.2 million neighbours, friends, leaders and problem-solvers, who seek to make a difference in the world and the local community as part of the Rotary movement.

The club’s major fundraiser is the weekly Stirling Farmers' Market – held in the City of Stirling carpark on Sunday mornings – with the primary beneficiaries including Foodbank WA, Karrinyup Community Men's Shed, Riding for the Disabled Carine, Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club and Salvation Army.

The club’s International Service arm supports causes such as Polio Eradication, Interplast, Shelter Box, Wheelchairs for Kids, and their Youth Service committee supports initiatives like the Rotary Youth Exchange and National Youth Science Forum.

To commemorate their 50th anniversary and the long partnership between the club and the City, we are delivering an interpretative trail at Lake Gwelup to educate the community on the local environment, Indigenous culture and local history.

The project will be used as a pilot project for other areas such as Trigg Bushland and Star Swamp in the future, and will help strengthen connection with place and shape how visitors experience Lake Gwelup.

The club has a long history of delivering local projects, including the design and construction of:

  • The Scout Hall for the 1st Karrinyup Scout Group at Lake Gwelup Reserve (Oct 1985)
  • The Remembrance Gazebo at Lagonda Drive, Lake Gwelup Reserve (Nov 1998)
  • A meeting place for the Mooro County Tour Group to provide seating at Lake Gwelup Reserve for members of their cultural tour groups (Oct 2016).

As winter approaches, the club’s activities are turning to addressing homelessness, with the final day for the community to donate items for their Backpacks for the Homeless initiative this Sunday 5 May at their main stall during the Stirling Farmers Markets.
