Client turned volunteer helps others belong

Thursday might just be Greg Carsten’s favourite day of the week.
It’s when the self-proclaimed “party prince” works as a City of Stirling volunteer at the Nollamara Day Club, where seniors connect and participate in a range of activities.
“I am a servant, I am a host, and that’s what I like to do,” Greg said.
The 35-year-old with Down syndrome started out as a client of a similar program, but his heart was set on giving back.
Staff agreed he was ready to step up to volunteer status three years ago. They describe him as bringing a unique warmth and dedication every week, along with his signature beaming smile.
“I like to make a difference,” Greg said.
“I’m very good at looking after people.”
Greg’s role includes welcoming senior clients to the program, assisting with administrative tasks, kitchen duties, and setting the dining room tables with his own flair.
“I can make my own design, like my own theme parties,” he said.
Greg’s story highlights what helping others to belong means to him.
The City is inviting input to its Everyone Belongs community engagement campaign to inform the Access and Inclusion Plan and Public Health Plan.
