Coastal protection works at Mettams Pool set to begin

From Sunday 23 March, the City will undertake sand nourishment at Mettams Pool to preserve beach amenities and reduce the impact of coastal erosion.
From Sunday 23 March, the City will undertake sand nourishment at Mettams Pool to preserve beach amenities and reduce the impact of coastal erosion. Approximately 5,000m³ of sand will be relocated from Trigg Beach, where natural sand build-up occurs each summer and autumn, to Mettams Pool, which is experiencing shoreline and dune erosion.
The City has survey and photographic records of its 7km coastline dating back to 1955. This data has provided a clear understanding of sand volumes and erosion trends, informing coastal management decisions such as the sand nourishment project.
To avoid impacting the surf break and recreational areas, sand will be taken from the upper and back sections of Trigg Beach. Some car bays will be temporarily close during harvesting with fencing in place. All major pedestrian access ways will remain open.
Sand will be trucked from Trigg Beach and stockpiled in the Saunders Street carpark during the day. From 6.00pm to 6.00am, it will be spread along the beach to create a buffer for the dune at Mettams Pool. The Saunders Street carpark and beach accessways will be temporarily closed during this time.
The works are expected to be completed by 30 March 2025 (approximately one week). To minimise disruption and ensure public safety, sand harvesting from Trigg Beach and spreading at Mettams Pool will occur at night. Local traffic access will be maintained; however, visitors and residents are encouraged to avoid the area where possible.
