Connecting Country with art at Lake Gwelup
Discover sandblasted designs celebrating Nyoongar culture along the Story Trail in Lake Gwelup
We recently unveiled the completed public artworks at Lake Gwelup on the Saturday 23 November with a combined launch to celebrate both the new Story Trail and the discoverable sandblasted artworks.
The project saw two emerging Nyoongar artists, Emily Rose and David Jones commissioned to work alongside Design Fabricator, Jahne Rees (Scape-ism) to create artworks that celebrated the culturally important site with subtle and discoverable artworks for walkers of the lake to enjoy.
As part of the design development, the artists workshopped their art into the stencil designs that are now sandblasted onto the pathway right around the lake, as discoverable artworks for everyone to enjoy.
The artworks acknowledge both the important men’s and women’s business, which was prevalent at Lake Gwelup; a sacred and integral aspect of Nyoongar culture on Mooro Country that encompasses the wisdom, traditions and practices passed down through the generations.
We encourage you to visit Lake Gwelup for your next walk and to look for the many artworks along the pathway.
The City would like to acknowledge Knowledge Guardian, Preston Culbong, who provided cultural knowledge on this project. In addition, thanks also goes to Artify Consulting who supported the design assist process.
