Green light for $6 million upgrade to key Osborne Park intersection

A multimillion-dollar intersection upgrade is set to boost safety and accessibility in the heart of Osborne Park and bring the Main Street Centre a step closer to realising its potential as a pedestrian-friendly community and small business hub.
The City of Stirling has collaborated with Main Roads WA on extensive improvements to the busy intersection of Main, Hutton and Royal streets in a project fully funded by the State Government.
The works are scheduled to start in late January and take about eight months to complete, with access to the Main Street Centre maintained throughout the project and any necessary road closures carried out at night.
“These intersection improvements will make a noticeable positive impact on the area in line with the community’s vision of a more vibrant and welcoming Main Street Centre,” City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said.
“I want to thank David Michael, the Member for Balcatta, for securing the $6 million in funding needed for these upgrades.
“This is a great example of the State Government and local government working together on a project that will benefit local residents and local businesses.”
A raised red asphalt intersection at Main, Hutton and Royal streets will support reduced traffic speeds and reflect the evolution of the area into a mixed-use precinct.
Raised red asphalt will also be used about 100m north of the intersection at a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Main Street.
The 40km/h speed limit recently introduced along Main Street will be extended further north, while 40km/h speed zones will be introduced on Royal Street and Hutton Street on approach to the main intersection.
Other changes to the intersection include pedestrian signals, a dedicated right-turn lane from Main Street onto Hutton Street, new traffic lights on the Hutton Street slip lane and landscaping.
“This is a busy intersection that is in need of an upgrade and the Cook Government is very pleased to be able to make that happen,” Balcatta MLA David Michael said.
"These works will make the area safer for everyone and they will also support the ongoing transformation of the Main Street Centre into a community and small business hub.”
The vision for the transformation of the Main Street Centre is underpinned by the City’s Main Street Local Development Plan and Main Street Urban Design Strategy, which were developed through extensive community consultation.
