In response to community concerns about pedestrian and vehicle safety, a significant upgrade to the intersection of Powis Street, Harborne Street and Jon Sanders Drive is set to begin in 2026/27. The City of Stirling, Main Roads WA and the Town of Cambridge have been working on a plan to improve safety at the heavily utilised intersection.

As part of the upgrade, an additional eastbound lane will be added to Powis Street, creating three eastbound lanes approaching the freeway. To prepare for these works, the City has conducted a review of surrounding roads to identify ways to enhance safety throughout the area.

Recent data reveals six right-turn crashes at the intersection of Rawlins Street and Powis Street since January 2020. To address this, the City is proposing to prohibit right-hand turns out from Rawlins Street into Powis Street. Vehicles will still be able to right turn into Rawlins Street from Powis Street.

The City plans to seek State Government funding to implement these safety measures, pending community feedback. Local residents are encouraged to get involved by providing their thoughts on the proposal by 17 April 2025.
