The City of Stirling has paid tribute to local heritage champion Barrie Baker who passed away last month.

Mr Baker, a local historian and long-time patron of the Mount Lawley Society, made a significant contribution to preserving the history and heritage of his local area.

He served on the City’s Heritage Advisory Committee from 2007 to 2010 and was involved in the development of the design control draft which led to the City’s Character Retention Guidelines.

A teacher at schools across the City, Mr Baker continued educating the community after his retirement, promoting local heritage and writing books about the history of Mount Lawley.

His knowledge, passion and community impact were recognised by the City in 2014, when a category of the City’s annual Heritage Awards was renamed in his honour.

The Barrie Baker Special Recognition Award is presented when an achievement is considered worthy of special commendation or does not fall within another category.

In June 2024, the Barrie Baker Special Recognition Award was presented to the Mount Lawley Society for its newsletter – a publication Mr Baker wrote in many times after joining the society in 1978.

At a state level, the WA Government honoured Mr Baker for his outstanding individual contribution to heritage at the 2011 WA Heritage Awards.
