Work to significantly enhance the safety and usability of the intersection at Main Street, Hutton Street and Royal Street will commence soon.
In collaboration with Main Roads WA, the City is planning to enhance the intersection at Main Street, Hutton Street and Royal Streets. We aim to create a safer and more accessible environment for vehicles and pedestrians. The project is part of the State Government’s WA Recovery Plan and aligns with their commitment to invest in road projects that create and support local jobs and local businesses.
The enhancements are an important step toward realising the vision for the Main Street Centre to become a vibrant and welcoming space that people choose to frequently visit. This vision is underpinned by the Main Street Local Development Plan and the Main Street Urban Design Strategy which were developed following extensive community consultation.
The project will be delivered in two stages, prioritising pedestrian safety and comfort to positively contribute and add to the vitality and ‘village feel’ of the area.
Key enhancements include;
Stage one
- Realigning the intersection and turning lanes to include safer pedestrian crossings at traffic signals. Red/green man pedestrian signals will be incorporated into the traffic signals for safer pedestrian crossing
- Traffic signals will be adjusted to enhance traffic flow during peak periods
- In line with the recently introduced 40 km/h speed limit on Main Street, a raised safety platform within the intersection will support reduced traffic speed and will reflect the transformation of the area into a mixed-use precinct
- Widening of median strips for landscaping and greenery.
Stage two (subject to tender costings)
- Red/green man pedestrian crossing signals will be installed on Main Street between Hutton and Royal Street and Eldorado Street intersections to provide a secure and controlled crossing point. This complements the existing signalised crossing on Main Street, just south of the Hutton and Royal Street intersection
- Extension of the 40km/h zone to north of Eldorado Street/Main Street intersection
- Upgrades to bus stops and access to driveways will ensure safe distances and sightlines between vehicles and pedestrians.
These collective measures will optimise traffic flows, enhance safety, and create a more balanced road system that accommodates the movement within the area while improving the urban experience for local businesses and people.

Stage one
The intersection and turning lanes will be realigned to include safer pedestrian crossings at traffic signals. Red/green man pedestrian signals will be incorporated into the traffic signals for safer pedestrian crossing. Traffic signals will be adjusted to enhance traffic flow during peak periods.
A raised safety platform within the intersection will support reduced traffic speed, in line with the recent 40 km/h speed limit on Main Street to reflect and support the transformation of the area into a mixed-use precinct.
Stage two
A new red/green man pedestrian crossing signal between Hutton and Royal Street and Eldorado Street intersections will be installed to provide a secure and controlled crossing point. This crossing complements the existing signalised crossing on Main Street, just south of the Hutton and Royal Street intersection.
Upgrades to bus stops and access to driveways will ensure safe distances and sightlines between vehicles and pedestrians.
Enhancements to landscaping are being considered as a staged approach for the overall project.
Work is scheduled to commence at the end of January 2025 and is expected to take eight months to complete.
Road closures, if required, will be undertaken during night works.
To ensure minimal disruption to businesses and visitors to the area, where required, road closures will be undertaken outside business hours during night works.
Access to the shops will be maintained. All shops will be accessible throughout the upgrade both by car and on foot.
